Ried / Spargeldorf Scherlebeck

The Ried in the north of Herten – local recreation area and Mecca for asparagus-fancier.

The recreation area Ried in the north of Herten is to be considered as a “bridge” between Ruhr area and the Münsterland of the people in this region. But by now it became an independent recreation destination, shaped by fields, meadows and small forests the Ried offers attractive destination for hikers and touring cyclists.

Since 1999 the “Spargeldorf Scherlebeck” is a special attraction in the Ried. Based on the initiative of three asparagus farmers a marketing concept evolved, which is a fixed term not only in Herten but also far beyond that by now.

“Spargeldorf Scherlebeck” – the name represents various activities and events all around the “Royal Vegetables”, which are participated by the local gastronomy, butchers, fishmonger, one market garden and a stable besides the asparagus farmers. Accordingly colourful and diversified featured is the annual programme. Numerous asparagus activities on the farmyard attract visitors from near and far.

Special climax are the –firstly in 2001- realized coronation of the Scherlebecker asparagus queen and the asparagus gala in May. The gala sees itself as a “social event for chosen minds of the Emscher-Lippe region and offers accordingly prominent cooks and hosts. In short the “Spargeldorf Scherlebeck” established a label.

By the way: The acreage for asparagus in the recreation area Ried amounts during the season 2001 already to about 30 ha. Asparagus cultivation – also this is one facet of Herten and of the “transformed” Ruhr area.
