Hoheward- The Landschaftspark
In the south of the towns new horizons open up for the visitors of the Landschaftspark Hoheward. The great panorama of the plateau Halde over huge areas of the Ruhr area is impressing, as well as the “lookout” from the balcony promenade onto the constantly changing sections of the surroundings.
Centre and emblem of the Landschaftspark is the 160 ha big and 152 meter high heap Hoheward, dumped out of 180 million tons of mountainstone.
Rearranged to an exceptional leisure and culture landscape it is an outstanding location in the “Neuen Emschertal”.
Horizon Astronomy is the central issue on the heap. Ideal conditions for the observation of the luminaries dominate here. In cooperation with the Public Observatory Recklinghausen and the initiative group horizon Astronomy, the unique and spectacular Horizon Observatory arose on the top of the heap as a central element of the Horizon Astronomy.
The accessible circular observatory has a diameter of about 95 meter. Two precisely justified metal arches soar above the circular area in an about 45 meter high hemisphere. With the aid of these meridian arches, which illustrate the local meridian or rather the celestial equator, the visitor is able to observe the course of the sun, the moon and the stars. To a large extent visible, they represent even now a new emblem of the metropole Ruhr.
From here the view turns to the horizontal sundial with the obelisk as the hand and shadow thrower, which was put up in 2005.
Another attraction is the Dragon Bridge, which connects the park district in Recklinghausen-Hochlarmark with the heap Hoheward.
For the development of the Landschaftspark the so called “promenade ring” was built all around the heap Hoheward, which bundles all way relationships. About at the half height of the heap the circa 6 kilometre long balcony promenade developed within the forest belt, which surrounds the heap on a stable leaving.
The tourism office HyBikeHerten offers guided tours on the heap, as well as barrier free guided tours. Further information are provided on the homepage of HyBikeHerten.
Together with the serpentines on which the plateau of the heap can be scaled, a diversified hiking trail is emerged, which offers manifold of recreational use.
