With his about 67.000 inhabitants, who are living on an area of about 37,31 square kilometre, Herten is a medium-sized town. The city is located in the north of the Ruhr area in close proximity to Recklinghausen and Gelsenkirchen and connection to the motorways A 43, A 2 and A 42.
Herten is connected to an efficient road network and is easily reached by public transport and vehicle.
Via car
From the north
Take the A43 in the direction Wuppertal/Bochm till the departure Recklinghausen/Herten. Take the third exit within the departure and drive further in the direction of Herten-Zentrum.
Via rail
You can reach Herten with the Deuschen Bahn AG from the railroad station Recklinghausen central station and (Herne) Wanne-Eickel central station. Recklinghausen is an IC-railway station with north-south-connection. There are hourly regional rail connections from Essen and Münster.
Via public transport
From Recklinghausen central station you take the busline 249 in direction to Herten (Monday till Saturday every quarter of an hour, between 10 pm and 12 pm every half an hour). The journey time averages 14 minutes.
From Wanne-Eckel central station you take the express bus SB 27 (Monday till Sunday every half an hour) to the stage Herten-Mitte. The journey time averages 30 minutes.
Via plane
Airport Düsseldorf
About 60 kilometres away from Herten is the International Airport Düsseldorf located. From Düsseldorf you are able to reach Herten by rail or public transport connections to the central station Recklinghausen.
Airport Dortmund-Wickede
About 40 kilometer away from Herten is the regional airport Dortmund-Wickede located. You are able to take the bus line SB 47 to the central station Dortmund and from there on you take the rail in direction Wanne-Eickel central station.
